Server went down

Server went down an hour or two ago. I have no idea what the problem was, but I took the liberty of installing upgrades to all software packages, making backups of the database, and restarting all the services.

Karchan should be back.

Let me know if anything is out of whack.

Photobucket Issues

As some of you have noticed, some photobucket images are not working, especially banners and some rooms. This is because Photobucket is no longer hosting third party images.

I decided to write a blog post about it, as it is more lasting than a public board message.

What this means is, images from Photobucket will not work any longer. It also means that if I (or anyone else) have made you a banner, it may give you an image saying that I need to upgrade.

Please know that I am working on uploading all banners elsewhere. I ask for your patience as I do this. If I am slow, please feel free to send me a MUDmail or email requesting your banner links. I'm trying to go by who is most active first, but I fully intend to give everyone their banners back in a timely fashion. :)

Thanks for reading!

New Settings Page

Most of you should by now be familiar with the fact that there is a new settings page. I have a good feeling about the current way I have set it up, in that for me it seems easy to add functionality quickly.

Today I released a new version. Bear in mind that your browser will aggressively cache a lot of the old settings page. You might need to jump through a few hoops to get the new version displayed.

The new version contains the following items.

That’s right, people, mud mail is back!!

A lot of the functionality here speaks for itself, but some things are not “obvious”.

The app will show only the first page of most recent mud mails. This is convenient, as it is usually the page that is of most interest. If you wish to see older mud mails, you can use the “Next” button. When you are at the last page, and you press ”Next”, the app will retrieve the next 20 mudmails.

You can send a mudmail to multiple people, just by using a comma-separated list in the “To” field.

You can also fill out “deputies” in the “To” field. I think it is fairly obvious what that does.

Send me a mudmail (to Karn) to show that it works! I cannot guarantee a reply, but I will try. I can add more information to this here Blog Post, if required.

There are three states that this tab can be in:

  • you are not a member of a guild, and a message will mention this.
  • you are a guild member, and can therefore view all information about the guild
  • you are a guildmaster, and can therefore view and edit almost all information about the guild

Bugs and Errors

I have been implementing all the functionality rather quickly, and I opted for getting it out there for you to try out as soon as possible. I have not tested everything and I have not written automated tests yet. There are some bugs that I know of, and probably plenty of bugs that are completely new to me. But it seems to be working fairly well, which is why I decided to release the current version.

If for some reason the page shows outdated/wrong information, you could try switching tab. Reopening the tab will retrieve all information from the server again.

If there is a problem communicating with the server, it will display a red error message at the bottom of the page.

If you do find bugs, please report them by raising a GitHub Issue with as much information as you can (preferably with examples).

Thank you for your time and I hope you enjoy the new stuff.

Sorry, people.

orry, people.

I decided to upgrade all the software packages, and I must have screwed it up somewhere. The machine went down and didn't come back up.

I had to restore a backup of yesterday. (we didn't lose much.)

I did manage to upgrade all the software packages now, though, so that's done.

High regards,

Encrypted Passwords

Passwords are now encrypted using an SHA-512 hash, this is much more secure than the SHA-1 I used to use. (This only is regarding the game, not the wiki accounts.)

Also, a conversion was in place (it means that if you logged on in the game, your password would be converted.) for a couple of months now.

This means people can log on with their usual password, and not notice anything.

A problem might occur for people who have not played the game in several months, as their password was not converted.

Deputies can assist now in password resets.

High regards,

It's Technical...

Just installed a new version of the mmud. Now the previous version had all sorts of goodies, but the version I just installed is purely of a technical nature.

I changed the way players are determined by the system as "playing" or "not playing". As this is rather an essential part of the game, I hope I did everything correctly.

It also means that, if I did not, you might also see non-playing players during the game. Kindly let me know when and where this happens, so I can fix it.

High regards,

New Method of Contact!

Hello everyone!

I will be short and to the point. The deputy team now have a way where you can contact all of us with one email. You may have noticed on the main page, there is now a 'Contact Us' section listing the email. Whatever you send to that address will be forwarded to each deputy.

We encourage those of you with problems, questions, or even ideas or suggestions to contact us this way so that we can discuss your email and get back to you.

We only ask that you give us at least three days to respond so that we can all discuss whatever you send and get back with you as a team. :)

Also, if you are having trouble logging into the game, please send us an email about it, as we would like to look into the matter. Thanks. :)

The address is And again, it can be located on the main page under the login section.

SSL Certificate extended

I do not know how many of you are using the secure encrypted version of the website available at, but if you do, you must have noticed that the certificate has been expired for the past 3 months of so.

I have now remedied the problem, and the certificate is now valid until the first of February 2018.

You can view/verify the certificate, by clicking on the GoDaddy badge you see on the left.

High Regards,

Linux update

Linux needed an update, badly, and I had to install the new kernel version.

That's the reason for the small amount of downtime, just now.

I restarted everything, and everything seems to be in order.

As always, let me know if anything is amiss.

High regards,

Merry Christmas to All and to All a Good Night!

I erry Christmas and a Happy Newyears to all of you.

As usual, I find myself with little time to spend here. Let us hope this changes in the coming year. I will make that my primary New Year's Resolution.

All the love,
